I've been teaching C1 about God.

Lately, I've been talking to her about St. Veronica and the concept of Patron Saints.

She already knows St. Anthony patron saint of lost things & St. Jude patron saint of the impossible.

I think half of our lives we'll have to pray to either Saint Anthony or Saint Jude but will be handy to teach her about Saint Veronica also.

I'm not sure what intercession she will be asked by us in our life time -- help us with this shot, make sure we don't fall terribly and break some bones.

Make the subject smile a little so he/she won't look like a frakkin' toaster on the photo.

Give us that decisive once in a lifetime shot..... Saint Veronica.

Sifting Through Old Photos

Where did the year go?

C1 and I are home alone for only one more night. Catwoman is scheduled to arrive from Sweden just in time for the New Year.

It's been tough.

I need a drink but cannot decide which one to take.

The year can only be described as surreal and memorable.

Surreal in a beautiful way. I managed to see my family complete after 25 years. It shouldn't be that hard to get everyone together but life has taken us all in different directions.

One has to think about how we can actually revisit being together again soon.

Santa gave me Chris Orwig's excellent book entitled People Pictures -- 30 Exercises for Creating Authentic Photographs.

Resolve to take more portraits.

Christmas - Tenderloins & UFOs

Shopping has exceeded all my expections.

It was worst than I ever expected.

I've had to explain to Catwoman my irrational fear or sales ladies and merchandisers at retailers in general and perfume counters specifically. Boils down to going to Macy's with a cousin of my mothers when we were young.

She was insistent on getting this sampler.

Man did she want this sampler. And she wanted a lot of them.

Perfume lady refused and it was a test of wills.

I would have done anything to remove myself from that situation.

So much for historical and freudian explanations for irrational fears.

Flash-forward to a couple of weeks ago, my british brother in law is in the home country.

We all are there for a wonderful family celebration.

We need to eat. Yes, we need to shop.

However, there are actual food merchandiser ladies who push product to customers.

They are nothing like Trader Joe's or Costco sampler where they stay within a restricted periphery to convince you to try their product -- gently typically with a smile and a sampler.

There, there is no samples. It is only a one liner.

British brother in law walked in supermarket aisle and was stopped abruptly by a Merchandiser.

Merchandiser: "Would you like to try my tenderloins??"

British Brother-in-Law: "How do you know they are tender??"

Of course, this is a recounting of the story and we are beyond ourselves in laughter.

My sister starts to look for this portly or skinny merchandiser

(it's fuzzy now how she looked but we know she is real).

But lemme tell you, we went back to that supermarket several times in search of that merchandiser lady to check out her tenderloins.

Hey, it's Christmas gimme a break!

Love home. Love the family.

Love the tenderloins but in this last trip I discovered Butcher's steak / Hanger steak as prepared by my Taiwanese brother in law.

Man, that was super super super.

If you have a butcher, you have to get the uncut hanger steak and google a recipe for yourself ... his involved lots of cilantro, spices and marination time.

If I can only give my brother in law a Michelin star.

It's better than any Capital Grill steak I've ever taste.

Chris Orwig Ted Lecture

Jet lag set in so I decided to Tweet and listen to Chris Orwig and his TED lecture.

Excellent photography. He mentioned Seal (the singer / photographer) told him...

"When I shoot with digital capture, I look for the mistake. When I shoot film I embrace it -- sometimes it's the flaw or scar makes the most beautiful photos."

Reminding me that when you take photos, it's the subtle imperfection that can create the infinitely beautiful picture.

Compose by leaving things out.

Rockport Batangas Diving

I don't know but there's something about spending time with family. I feel like a new person.

Can't say enough about the good in the home country.

There's nothing like being on a beach, diving, feasting on mangoes.

I feel guilty almost having enjoyed all that mango and family time -- but we all need to recharge some time.

Hope everyone is also gearing up for the holidays. Another chance to be with family.

In Praise of Photographer Artu Nepumoceno

As I told my brother, it's much better to hire a pro when you have a family affair.

I am glad he agreed with me and convinced the family to get Artu Nepomuceno to shoot our big reunion / 50th wedding celebration of my parents.

It's not just about the raw talent here, Artu and his assistant Miggy were true gentlemen and stand-up guys -- ready to go with the flow and take charge when necessary.

I talk about the connection a photographer needs to have with subjects. In the case of our family, he had a never ending stream of 13 grandchildren to shoot in varying states of happiness, distress and frenzy.

We're not even talking about the parents and grandparents who were celebrating the anniversary.

Beautiful chaos and wonderful result.

It's nice to be on the other side of the lens sometime not worrying about capturing the moment.

I guilty for diving with my plastic kodak camera because I was too cheap to get a dive casing for the point and shoot.

Oh well. Need to work harder to get hands on new toys.

Guillaume Martin CEO of photosharing site Pictarine took the time to share some thoughts on the future of photosharing and photography.

Photosharing is something quite common to us now but not so just a few years back.

Guillaume Martin gives us a pulse of the industry and perhaps as photographers and afficionados we can leverage photo-sharing to enjoy, share and expand our passion.

TNTD: What do you see as basic truth and reality in the picture sharing world these days?

Any trends or shifts?

Guilaume Martin : Photo-sharing is now a mature market.

What is interesting is that traditional photo albums are now co-existing with photo streams (Facebook / Instagram and others).

The question today is how to deal with these 2 sources.

Editing photos in one-click (such as Instagram's filters) is another emerging trend. I'm really wondering if it is the beginning of something big or a two-year trend that just makes photo-sharing more fun.

TNTD: Some more fine traditional art curators / directors seems to think there is a reversion to traditional photography because the swing to electronic sharing is so strong.

Do you see a trend back to prints / poloroids, etc. ?

Guillaume Martin: It reminds me of how some people prefer to listen to vinyl records instead of MP3: the touch, feel and sound is quite different!

But for most people, the convenience of digital files is just too good.

For photos, I think it's the same story.

The feeling when handing a polaroid to friend is not the same as sharing a picture by email but the convenience of enjoying the photos on the go on an iPad or a mobile phone or any connected display is just too good. Not to mention that it is a lot cheaper.

Still, it's interesting to see how traditional photography has inspired new services like Instagram and that Lomography camera has a growing and active community!

TNTD : How can companies? Groups? Organizations leverage photo sharing to gain more customer stickness or establish relationships with them?

Is there a place for corporation in the photo-sharing world?

Guillaume Martin: Clearly photo is now highly social. People take more and more photos daily and it can be easy to find out from a stream of photos what the photographer enjoy the most in his/her life. This is a huge opportunity for corporation. They can use informations from those photo stream to know better there customer or potential customer and engage better with them. I think Facebook fan pages will have their equivalent in the photo-sharing world very soon.

Now, there are new startups like Onefeat which allow you to share your photos through a game.

This is an awesome way for corporates to promote their brand and interact with their fans.

TNTD: Do you think in the start-up world, there will ever be a next flickr? Or will there be pockets of strong photo-sharing sites?

Guillaume Martin : Photo-sharing market is now dominated by a few well-established actors, Facebook being the first one.

I don't see how new actors will find a place in the coming years.

On the other side, it seems like a new mobile photo-sharing app is launching every day, but this market is now really crowded. So people are using several services to interact with their different communities and they don't care to have different services.

What they are looking for today are tools to help them deal with all these services and photos.

So yes, I think we will live a long time with pockets of strong photo-sharing sites, but services on top of these will be the next big thing.

TNTD : What are the key trends in photography and what do we have to watch out for in the next 5 years?

Guillaume Martin : At Pictarine, we receive a lot of feedback from our community and we know that what people are looking for today is organization: they have too many photos spread over too many devices and photo-services: their computer, their mobile, their iPad, their Facebook, their Instagram, their Flickr...

People want to see photos of their last week-end, photos of their son, recent photos of their friends right now. And automatic photo tagging is at the center of this: tagging your photos manually is tedious and image recognition is still not mature, so for me automatic photo tagging and photo organization will be one of the major key trend.

An other interesting development in the photo field is the new Lytro camera. It is really interesting to see a real innovation in a camera sensor. That innovation blur the line between the hardware and the software by allowing to change the focused subject in a picture later on a computer and I will definitely keep an eye it.

TNTD : Can fine art photography and amateur photography converge in the open world of picture sharing?

Definitively. On many photo sharing websites such as Flickr, 500px or even Instagram, pictures from fine art photographer are displayed along side pictures from amateurs.

I think this is something really important for both communities because they are inspiring each other and creating better photos in the process.

Of course the website has to make sure the quality of the photos are not too different. And that's why I think websites such as 500px are doing a better job mixing both communities because of their open rating system.

As an add note to this interview.

One of the things that really resonated with me is the rate and speed of photo-sharing adoption.

From concept, execution to rapid maturity in a matter of only a few years. I think that as there are enterprenuers and innovators like Guillaume Martin and his team at Pictarine those who love photography like me will have the options, services and choices to enjoy photos even more.

Atom Magadia Grounded in Old Manila International Airport Photo Exhibit

Life friend and photographer Atom Magadia is staging his first solo photo exhibit entitled Grounded in the Old Manila International Airport.

It features 18 prints of some of his best shot of the Los Angeles environs.

I may not be able to attend this but if you happen to be in Manila please check it out.

I will certainly coax Atom to send some of his photos and feature more of his work here.

The Prints will be on display from December 4 to January 6 in the Filipinas Heritage Library, the historic 1930s Manila International Airport in the heart of Makati (the Philippines' central financial district). The venue was the country's first international airport and served as the headquarters of the U.S. Army Airforce during World War II.

Managed to get in touch with photographer Maia Flore. She mentioned that "Sleep Elevation" the title of this series was created over time -- a long story as she writes. First conceived at 7 years old and then 15 and then the last of the series when she reached her 21st year.

Simply awesome imagination and beautiful work here. She's called a contemporary surrealist by some in the blogosphere.

Thriving in Chaos and Following the Money ....

Like a John Woo movie where the doves fly in slow motions prior to a gun battle, it's like that talking to my father now.

Conversations with him are like golden surreal moments in time and I'd like to write about these conversations as if were a moment prior to finding the right shot or decisive moment.

When he's telling his story (specially stories about business), there's a certain mathematical precision and logic to both his story and the fluidity of his thought process.

It's amazing. I wish I had even some of in me by genetics or osmosis.

"Chaos", my Dad smiles and mentions "enable one to have an opening."

Most of his wins came at moments of chaos and difficulty which makes sense.

He sat at the Hilton and spoke to this young VP from Kohlberg Kravis and Roberts (KKR). It was chaos at that time. Somehow, he planted a seed of an idea which enabled him to have another person buy a brand and he by the same token acquire the same brand for a discount

for our home country.

"Follow the money", he tells me.

J, will have to ask you to tell him to re-tell the story to us again. It's amazing.

It's classic and brilliant -- perfectly executed, timed and geez.

Lytro - No More Need to Focus

Thought it would be interesting

After reading parts of Ren Ng's (the founder of Lytro) PHd dissertationhttp://www.lytro.com/renng-thesi..., I would summarize the answer to my own original question this way. Possible photography advantages:

Focus control after-the-fact (can decide what to focus on in post processing)
Depth of field control after-the-fact (can decide whether you want narrow depth of field or high depth of field in post processing). Can potentially get larger depth of field, even while still shooting at large aperture (high shutter speed, low noise and large depth of field which is hard on a conventional camera)
Larger depth of field might really be enabling for some kinds of macro photography
Might be able to achieve lower noise because you have multiple samples of very similar views of the subject so some random noise might be able to be removed by comparing these samples
Since the entire image is being built digitally from lots of little pieces, the image can be corrected for known faults in the lens (even more so than is done today with regular images)

Possible disadvantages:

Lower resolution - 1/2x in each direction (the more refocusing power you have, the less resolution you capture)
Aliasing artifacts
Additional cost of micro lens array
Additional post processing required to render desired photo

Here's my summary of the general technology from reading the dissertation. A micro-lens array is placed in front of a traditional photo sensor in a camera such as the one shown in the diagram below. This results in N small, lower resolution, images being recorded on the photosensor (one for each micro lens). Each of these images is taken from a slightly different perspective as each image represents lightrays coming from a slightly different angle. Computer software can then be used to combine all these different images in unique ways to provide different views of the scene (different focus points or different perspectives). This type of camera is called a plenoptic camera.

Like many works of art, set up time and preparation enables better results.

I haven't found the right formula to get things to work faster. The workflow manager in me wants to program everything but life has to remain fluid.

So much for preparation, people with either cooperate be prepared or ill-prepared.

November and December hosts a lot of photo exhibitions. I'll be making rounds of friends like Markus Hentonnen and Atom Magadia who have shows coming up in a couple of week.

Shall feature them and hope you can attend.

Famous People + Yen for Photography

I've been reading about the lives of actor Leonard Nimoy and model Helena Christensen.

Both are avid photographers with different paths to success.

In parallel to their lives of fame, they have pursued their yen for photography.

I have a vague recollection of an interview Leonard Nimoy gave one of the magazine. He was talking about his photography and giving his two cents about the psychopathology of people and their typical ways of being. He was referring to people being heavily materialistic and acquisitive rather than experiential.

No matter who much you have, it will never be enough Nimoy recounted.

Maybe I am mixing up interviews and people but it struck a chord.

Life is too short and having richer experiences trumps any material acquisition.

I think like all of these famous people, the message is the same -- have lost of fun and take more photos.

I should write more blogs.

You wonder about those springlike days. The are few and far between. Sun yesterday sandwiched by drizzles of snow.

Hard to imagine spring came and went and no photographs to show for.

There were moments this spring where I was opting to go out but there was always a reason to rush rush.

Was nice to see Freese last night. I am no big Cardinals fan but remember being brought to a game at Busch stadium many years ago -- the fans there are also fervent but warm. I saw larger families with peanuts (lots of peanuts).

Heading towards the end of summer.

It's been quick, memorable, light on activities.

Somehow the velocity of works has kept Catwoman, C1 and I extremely busy.

Weekend have been sleeping sessions instead of excursions.

Some last minute friends stopping by from far away lands would prompt us to leave the house to explore more in the last days of summer.

Hoping to try new things, sample new restaurants, zonk out in the sand somehow.

Tomorrow the family each takes a camera, C1 included.

She'll have the point and shoot and take photos from a different perspective.

Never too early to get them to work and enjoy.

I love that the art world has somehow taken the long view of expanding from their traditional base of customers to "everyone" -- everyone who wants to buy art.

I'm hoping that trend just grows exponentially and so with it the definitive accessibility of art for all to enjoy. An added joy is the accessibility of the photographers and artists, email and facebook which provides for context and communications.

One thing perfectly clear to me is a lot of photographers aren't the types that are reclusive. Most of the wonderfully talented and gifted ones want to be seen, heard and understood. Like all artists, their photos are product of their talent, imagination and circumstance.

There is an upside to irrationality. For those who love photography like myself, these website only provide for additional venues of talent discovery.

You can't have a splash everyday to cool you off. You need to work, toil, go about daily life. Life is hard and no matter how you spin it, you have to take things one day at a time.

I wonder how the celebrities do it: smile, pose, seem normal but nothing about their lives resembles normal. Everything is staged or is comes and goes in a frenetic pace. It's just the nature of the beast. Kudos to those how can live a semi-normal life.

This summer there's a rush for experience and fun. It's a good time to have family time. The rest of the year is a blur anyway. I wish there were more time to watch movies though.

I think about that a lot. Back in the home country, it was constantly hot and humid. Just like New England these days, you leave the shower and immediately you are sweaty again. What's the point?? Multiply that discomfort and that was a normal day back in the home country in the summer.

So moviehouses were air-conditioned havens and the way that people charge there was not on a per movie basis. You basically come in early and then fall asleep there for the rest of the day. That was heaven. Who cares if you can recite the dialogue by the time you've watched the movie the fourth time -- it was all about the cold comfortable air.

I have missed so many movies that I have to resort to finding almost closing blockbuster stores to find for sale DVDs to get some of the old movies. Tough luck doing that.

I'm hoping to see Terri, laugh at Aziz Ansari doing 30 minutes or less, debating if I want to get depressed seeing Contagion or the Danish movie Armadillo.

There's the default "maybe" mindless Cowboys and Aliens and of course Mission Impossible 4 --- possibly.

Tattoos

Last Saturday a friend M was at a party that Catwoman and I attended. I met M only once previously in his pre-tattoo days.

I think for folks with tattoos there's life before and after.

He decided to have a large tattoo starts at sleeve-length and extends inward to his upper arm.

It's a tattoo of San Miguel slaying a dragon.

I'm not sure how to go about asking a person if I could take a photo of their tattoo but I think I should start because it's soooo interesting why they subject themselves to so much pain and it seems from how he described it, he wants to have more.

It's a work of art.

Reading through some article and looking at photos of German Saez. I wish I had more time.

A quick conversation with a life friend who told me he is leaving his job in a lottery company in keeping with his conscience.

I understand him. He will land safely in his next job.

For now, there's a momentary point of uncertainty but if you're not happy; why bother.

Not throwing mud at lottery companies in general. There's just a general aversion to gambling. It truly destroys families and brings the black and blue in relationships.

Here's to greener pastures Mr. B.

Catwoman and C1 were both having problems last night, a bug.

I've been pinning it to food but Catwoman insists its a bug.

No matter what, we were constantly trying to get them to and from bed to the bathroom.

Hope it's only a 24 hour thing.

Prepared them simple porridge for lunch and C1 is taking pedialyte to keep her hydrated.

We missed out on the sun.

I want to go the extra mile and let you know how special you are and for that reason there should be a top 10 list on How to date an Australian model (assuming this is a personal aspiration of yours).

HOW TO DATE AN AUSTRALIAN MODEL

1. Leverage your musical talents to win and keep the girl.

You don't have to be a Gene Simmons, Ozzy Osbourne

or Justine Beiber -- just be you.

2. Models choose to be models. Don't stereo-type like other people do.

Take her as an individual.

Model Story No. 1

I was in Hong Kong many years ago and there was a typhoon.

Lots of people stranded and the airlines decided that passengers would have to get

temporary rooms. There were a lot of people on the flight and the problem

was that one person in the room needed to have a credit card to ensure that if there were

miscellaneous charges to the room -- it could be properly charged. There were a lot of

overseas workers on the flight who didn't have credit cards.

Cristina Garcia a famous model (then and now) was on that flight and she was very just

low-key. I took some people. She took some people --No attitude, no worries. She simply

volunteered and we chatted a bit saying what a predicament. I knew who she was but

probably the women she helped didn't -- very cool.

Models are real people. They don't want to be treated like "models" -- they want to be

treated like normal people.

3. Learn how to cook. Models need to professionally be mindful of their diets, figure and general well-being. If you an cook, calorie count and find a passion for cooking -- you may be her personal shrimp on the barbie.

4. Meet them prior to signing with Elite or IMG. Since you are turning 18, you will have the chance to meet models before they hit the big time. That's the best time to meet them. They still have massive amounts of discretionary free time.

5. Be realistic with your expectations. If you cannot date an Australian model, I would highly recommend gunning for Scandinavians.

I didn't think that I would have anything in common with Will Ferrell. I have two.

One I can make people laugh and Two I am married to a beautiful Swedish woman.

I also saw Will Ferrel live in a Swedish activity many years ago. He was making fun of his Swedish in-laws then and making fun of the culture. We had a good laugh.

I don't recommend you do that but making people happy is always a great plus. I

f you can make them laugh, you can get the girl.

It's been a rainy start of summer.

I've resolved to take the camera out of the bag more frequently and just shoot.

No more excuses for me.

Life friend and photographer Raul Echivarre decided to join Facebook so I am expecting to get a healthy dose of intelligently composed, thought-provoking and even challenging photo sets.

Raul don't let me down. Post photos on facebook. I'll also welcome the journals of your travels to exotic phot0-destinations. Where did you say you were going next? Shanghai?

NO more excuses about not having the time or not having the camera.

There's the iphone which is great and I bit the bullet to get the smart canon in lieu of the heavy Nikon. Though friends warned about a better iphone5 camera, what the heck.. enjoy the 4.

Our old grill unfortunately had to say goodbye to us after rust eat away at its bottom-belly.

Like most material things in life, there's always adequate replacement.

Catwoman already did her signature potato salad last Sunday. I can't recall what else we ate but the salad as memorable. When we start to get salad, we'll have to start to fire up the grill.

Should be an interesting and gastronomically rewarding summer.

Tntd: How did you get started in photography?

Agata Kacprzak: I can't remember how i got into doing photography, it was more or less 5 years ago and it just happened. I remember that when I was about 8 years old was really eager to hold a camera. My father didn’t want to take photos but I did anyway. It turned out to be blurred and I wasted film.

Tntd: Family seems to be a big influence you even have collection entitled Family photos. What was the thought behind the collection?

Agata Kacpzak: My project "Family pictures" is a collection of photographs from my family's archive and a friend's family (some photos I borrowed from my friend for that project). I have never got to know some of these people, most of them are dead now. I was always interested in a family history as well as what happens after death. Photographs are a good way not to forget.

In my project, I wanted to cut the borderline between present and the past. Looking at photographs transports one from the past into present; it’s like bringing people back to life -- so to speak. I call it a “flashback” moment.

It's important to know who you are and where you come from (your roots). Yes, I suppose that family has had a certain impact on me. I wish I had more pictures taken from my childhood.

Perhaps, I would remember more. Photographs are important mementos.

Years ago people used to photograph important events from their lives; wedding, baptism, first communion, graduation day, family trips etc.

XIX century left us with terrific post-mortem photography. Now things have changed. Photography has become more easily accessible to everyone. We can take pictures any time we feel like.

I've been capturing my surrounding for months, taking pictures of everyday life which I post on my blog. I have loads of films still waiting to be developed. I enjoy composing a picture, placing objects and people the way I want to without moving them, accepting coincidence and take it as blessing. That feeling is extremely exciting. I like to perceive. I'm quite good at it (I think). But on the other hand I like to have control over what I photograph. Create order out of chaos. Often, I have the image ready in my mind, I look for particular models and it takes some time to arrange everything.

Recently I've been working on several new personal projects, one of them is rooted somewhere in the documentary tradition, slightly inspired by literature of South America, nostalgic and melancholy. People from the pictures are my friends.

I am also interested in a language, naming and classifying things to be able to understand them, how it determines thoughts. Photography became the code that serves as a separate communication channel. I have started a project about that but decided to put it off for a while to get more knowledge on the subject.

TNTD : There's a certain mystery in your photos particularly in the Sasha Gusov shoot. The use of shadows are amazing. Pls. tell us more about the shoot, the circumstance and the idea behind this shoot.

Valeriya Vygodnaya: It was a shoot made by a genius British Russian- born photographer and my friend Sasha Gusov. He had a big art project with beautiful models, designer Phillip Tracey and his absolutely fabulous hats, I was just watching a Master of light at work and just had a chance to make a few quick shots on that day. He gave his permission to keep the pictures in my portfolio. Sasha influenced my vision a lot and gave me "love" to shoot on black-n-white 35 mm film. Thanks to him I got to know about the world of Andre Kertesz, Elliot Erwitt, Henry Lartique.

TNTD: I love the photoshoot with the Russian model and the Russian background. Share some insights about your photographic style -- is it more technical or spontaneous?

Valeriya Vygodnaya: The  name of that shoot is "La Retour". The return. It was a first time I   came back to Moscow, where I am originally from, from London since I  moved there in 2009. I had this nostalgic feeling of returning to a  place where you do not belong anymore. I asked my friend actress and  model Varvara Voye to go for a walk to the Red Square and I imagined a  story of a very famous actress, who returns to her childhood city  have dreams, memories and people from the past coming back. I  captured the beauty of the Square as well as a mood of someone who made a  return to his past to open himself the future. I really like the  picture where Varvara is posing with her eyes closed in front of  Saint Basil the Blessed cathedral. I intentionally wanted that location  to emphasize how big is the historical  impact of the Square to every  Russian.

 
TNTD:  I love the humor in the photo of the model with the woman staring. I think there's a uniqueness, charm and memorability factor. How did you get into photography and can you share some interesting funny moments when you were shooting, modeling or just interesting anecdotes as you do your work?

 There   was a moment where I caught my luck on that shoot. Varvara and I were   walking down Tverskaya street (central Moscow street) and I saw a very   sad lady, who worked in the shop whic selled mobile-phones". The lady   set up on a bench and had some rest after standing on her feet for 8   hours (it is forbidden for a sales person to sit-down during the day).   Varya set on that bench as well and then that was IT- the moment - the   lady got very interested in beautiful blond girl sitting next to it and   all I had to do was just to capture their invisible communication.I   prefer to stay invisible, to shoot what I see and not to direct a model   too much. I love world around me and I like to observe life. I dont   want to change it, just to capture my own point of view on it.

Valeriaya Vygodnaya: Even though I started shooting at a young age, I had a very long-winding path to photography. I used to study acting and even worked as an actress. I did journalism for some magazines and then I became a stylist and fashion editor of In Style (Russian edition). I started to work closely with photographers and it fascinated me a lot. As a stylist, I always used clothes as a painter used colours to create a composition, but I always had a feeling that I want to try to frame my composition myself. I was on a shoot one in Milan and I had a chance to work with the great Italian fashion photographer Pierro Biason who saw my pictures on my small Olympus camera. He told me that I had an eye for photography and that I should continue to nurture my talent. Then, I moved to London, went to Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design to study some photography basics and got my first full frame Nikon. That was the beginning of my love affair with photography. While experimenting I also had a unique chance to explore some archives at Conde-Nast library at Vogue House in London where I did research on some of the best photos from old issues of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Traveler's. French Vogue and epoche of Guy Bourdin is still one of my favorite in fashion photography.

Funny   moments... Ah lots of them and it is so hard to remember.  Shoot is   always an alive process with lots of people involved. No matter if it is   a fashion shoot or a street photography, these moments surround me all   the time. They follow me, I am following them. Step by step.

TNTD: You've got quite an arsenal of equipment but I see Leica's in the mix. What do you think of Leicas and also what do you think about mobile photography? I ask because I see so many European photographers embracing the medium. It it also a trend in Russia?

I shoot with different types of camera, mostly on Film and digital Nikons, but they are very heavy. I am very tiny girl that's why I wanted to have a camera which was light; which I could carry around with me all the time and with a good quality lens. Leica was my choice and the results have been great. Quality and speed is outstanding. I have just a simple small D-lux 5 but I can shoot everything on it. I even took it to my last trip to Venice as a main camera to support my film Nikon. Also Leica is a legend and I am proud to have one and to share Cartier-Bresson's ideas of decisive moments.

I know that there are several Leica stores in Russia opened last year and it had a great success. I have no doubts why!)))  The Store also runs some workshops and photography masterclasses, which  I find a great idea to unite Leica fans and to educate them in history  of photography. I like when people are "like-minded", share some common  space togeather and enjoy the photographic process. It is inspiring and  also is a lot of fun!

TNTD: Share a little bit more about your photographic projects, personal projects, fun projects.

Valeriya Vygodnaya: Currently  I am working on a very big  book project and an exhibition. It will be  very important for me to devote myself completely to it and do as much  as I can. It will be a surprise, conceptual, philosophical and  photographic work. I work in collaboration with greatest people whom I  admire and I learn from them every day. I am expecting to finish and  expose my work to the world this Autumn. I am very happy being in a  long-term process of work. It is completely different to my instinctive  and fast shooting, it makes me look deeper and think and find ways to  myself.

Apart from that, I shoot a lot and I am planning to capture Kate and William's Wedding fun this week-end in London.

TNTD:  Share 3 things you didn't know about Valeriya Vygodnaya but would like to share. 

I love to shoot everything and everywhere that makes me feel life and think and find some answers to my questions.

I am obsessed with masters of printing and toning in the darkrooms. They are truly genius people and I send big respect to those who print photos on their own. 

Dogs are the best creatures on the planet. All dogs really go to heaven.

TNTD:  IF you had ONE photography Dream project what would it be?

It would start after joining Magnum agency of photographer. One and very long project. A journey.

TNTD:  Can you also share a photography technique/trick/or smart idea you've learned over the years that have helped you become a PRO.

Valeriya Vygodnaya: Shoot everything you can and then just be creative in the darkroom or a Photoshop. It is important what and how you see and if you keep your eyes open and can see -- that makes you a Pro or Pro sort of.

How to Explain Happiness to your Kids

Fast approaching spring.

I wish there were more time to write and take photos but I'm trying to concentrate on work as much as I can.

One wonders how most families do it, work, hockey games, cooking, cleaning -- approximating fractions of sanity.

Reading Alain de Botton again just because.

I finished Architecture of Happiness and Status Anxiety a few early mornings as I exchanged chat messages with Mom on her travel plans to visit us.

This morning C1 decided she wanted to paint. I spoke to her about the need for concentration and devotion. She looked at me slightly perplexed.

"Can I have bunnies (as in bunny crackers)??"

"Yes, after you finish your painting"

After she got her bunnies I asked her

"Gooman-Boom, are you happy?"

"Hmm.... she smiled a little like she was shedding some part of the rainbow she drew from her shoulder"

"I want to paint some more...."

Also had a chance to chat with my younger brother J.

I am sure he is architecting his own happiness ... and taking wonderful photos.

If only, he posts them online.

How do you explain happiness to your kids??

"Wait you have to change your diaper... Gooman-boom!!!"

"You have to catch me....!!!!! hihihii ....."

I guess happiness also involves a chase.

Clowns Aren't Creepy Today

Catwoman, C1 and I made the trek to the Big Apple Circus at City Hall.

C1 seemed quite excited about the prospect of seeing animals like horses, dogs and maybe elephants.

No elephants today but the other animals didn't disappoint.

Glad we made the trip and it was her first taste of cotton candy -- she loved it.

I still maintain that clowns give me the creeps. I think this particular shop decidedly toned down their clowns to make them less creepy. Unfortunately, the show had a thin line-up of acrobats, tricks and fun stuff and the clowns hardly made us laugh.

Fine.

As long as they aren't too creepy and C1 doesn't get inexplicably traumatized by them, they are OK today.

My photographs are derived from everyday senses - A moment of motion, shape, sound, smell and color.

Japanese photographers like Ihei Kimura – I am not aware of other photographer`s preference, but, Ihei Kimura, Ken Domon, Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki are all great photographers. I'm sure they have always inspired us.

Wit – I believe I have only just started, so, I am still searching for my “wit”.
Maybe I will find it in 5 or 10 years time.

I do not think I am famous but Hopefully in 5 or 10 years time...

Photoicon. I found this magazine when I went to London. I loved their unique view point. Unfortunately, the magazine is now discontinued.

Still life. I've started my photography career 4 years ago, I had no interested in becoming a photographer then. But, I read Irving Penn's book "A NOTEBOOK AT RANDOM”. This totally changed my life and inspired me to become a photographer. I started to take photos and chose still-life and portrait. I love the way the images tells a story.

Working for magazines gives – It has been great experience working for magazines, I enjoy planning the theme with the team to produce the image. In future, I am interested in working with international magazines for a new challenge.

I came up with dancing from – I love various styles of dance. Especially Contemporary dance and I want to capture the feeling of that. I am also interested in taking photos of dancers in the future.

Best Way to Get Good photos is To Take Bad Ones

I am sure there are many ways parents teach their children how to succeed. C1 has been taking a lot of photos lately. She started with a vTech kidizoom (the tough kid camera) but she got bored with it.

She's fascinated by her mother's camera now (a canon) and pulls out her disarming smile and says

"Can I take your picture?" (sometimes there's a please...)

With a smile like that how can you say " No! "

The best way to take good photos is to take bad one.

She is just shooting and shooting.

There's a lot of feet, dark spots, artistic shots =)

She's good and has no fear. Just the way I like it.

It would be irresponsible for me to tell you to take photos when you are stuck in traffic.

Sometimes you just are stuck.

I remember stuck in 2 to 3 hour traffic during the holidays in the home country. Life was all about getting out early, leaving late.

I am quite lucky my own commute is manageable. Some commute hours and hours and hours.

How do some people cope with traffic?

- They learn another language like Chinese.
- Draft to do list.
- Create next insanely great photo idea.
- Start multiple yoga movements, neck and back twists.
- Start figuring out a synopsis for your biography.
- Call someone. Anyone.
